Co-sleeping, inclined sleepers, and crib decorations are now prohibited, according to new safety guidelines for parents.

No co-sleeping is also a new rule from the American Academy of Pediatrics

As of Tuesday, new guidelines have been issued to ensure the safety of babies while in their beds

New guidelines have been issued by the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) regarding the safe sleep of infants. Infants should be placed on flat, non-inclined surfaces with their backs to the bed, according to the new guidelines. Co-sleeping was also mentioned in the policy statement.

According to the report, nearly 3,500 infants in the United States die each year from sleep-related causes, including SIDS and accidental suffocation or strangulation in bed.

The guidelines stress that babies should be placed on firm, flat, and non-inclined sleep surfaces in order to reduce the risk of suffocation, wedging, and entrapment. Aside from cardboard boxes as short-term emergency sleep locations and bed-sharing, the new recommendations urge people to stay away from all non-included sleeping surfaces.

The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) recognises and respects that many parents routinely bed share for a variety of reasons, including the facilitation of breastfeeding, cultural preferences, and the belief that it is better and safer for their infants. The evidence suggests that bed-sharing is not recommended under any circumstances." In a crib or bassinet, parents can feed, comfort, and respond to their baby's needs while they sleep."

In addition, parents should be aware of the dangers of bed-sharing, according to the organisation

In addition to the introduction of tummy time, the use of pacifiers only "once breastfeeding has been firmly established," and the prohibition of home cardiorespiratory monitors to reduce the risk of SIDS, AAP updated its recommendations for infant safe sleep.

U.S Consumer Product Safety Commission

U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission's 2021 announcement of a ban on various sleep products, including inclined sleepers, appears to be in line with the new guidelines for new infant sleep products must be no more than 10 degrees above or below horizontal by the time the rule takes effect on June 23, 2022.

Tummy time should begin around two weeks of age to help prevent injuries like plagiocephaly (a flat head) and torticollis (twisting of the neck), a paediatrician told TODAY in 2020 after the recall of Fisher Price's Rock 'n Play inclined sleeper (twisted neck).A few minutes here and there on their stomachs will help them strengthen their neck and improve their head control, she advised at the time of the incident.
