As he moved from classroom to classroom in the Texas elementary school, the 18-year-old gunman shot and killed at least 19 children, according to authorities, in the latest horrific act in a country that has seen a run of atrocities. Law enforcement shot and killed the assailant.

According to state Sen. Roland Gutierrez, who was briefed by state police, the dead toll included three adults. At this point, it is unclear whether or not the attacker was counted among the victims.

Robb Elementary School in the predominantly Latino town of Uvalde saw its bloodiest shooting since a shooter slaughtered 20 children and six adults at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut, almost a decade ago.

As the school board's chief executive officer Hal Harrell remarked in announcing that all school activities were suspended until further notice, "My heart is torn today," he added. It's going to need a lot of prayers to get us through this, because we're a small community."

Ten days before, a white supremacist rampage at a supermarket in Buffalo, New York, sparked a wave of mass shootings across the country. As in the wake of the Sandy Hook massacre, the prospects for any change in the country's gun laws appeared bleak.Authorities did not give a reason for the attack, but Governor Felipe Calderon named the attacker as Salvador Ramos and said he lived in a rural area approximately 135 kilometres west of San Antonio.

As Mr. Gutierrez pointed out, Ramos had hinted at an attack on social media, saying that "the kids should look out."The gunman was shot and killed by a Border Patrol agent who was working nearby at the time of the shooting and entered the school without waiting for backup, according to a law enforcement official who spoke on the condition of anonymity because he was not authorised to discuss the incident publicly.According to a law enforcement source, the agent was wounded but was able to walk out of the school.

Investigators believe the attacker acted alone, according to school police chief Pete Arredondo.

Arredondo said there were "many injuries," but it was unclear exactly how many people had been hurt. Uvalde Memorial Hospital had previously reported that 13 children had been admitted. A 66-year-old lady was listed in critical condition at another facility.

Arredondo added that Robb Elementary School educates students in the second, third, and fourth grades and has a student body of little under 600. There were no ages given for the victims. This was the final week of classes before summer break for the students at my school.Officials in tactical vests diverted traffic while FBI agents entered and exited the facility as a large contingent of law enforcement officers flooded the area.
